... and now I am getting a few responses about the lighting and signage, so here are some questions answered.

The total wattage on all new signage amounts to 18. That's 18 watts for the equivalent of 320 in luminescence, and each unit is said to have a running life of 50,000 hours. That's the economics.

As far as the aesthetics go, some people have complained that the four LEDs on the large sign are visible as reflections of four bright dots when approaching the pub, or viewing from the garden, directly underneath.

All this lighting is bound to involve compromise, and the reason for setting the two new down-lights where they are is so that the sign will be as visible as possible at night, from as far away as possible, and this is from quite close to Walcot Yard as they are now.

The two lights are positioned over the 'B' and over the double 'L', and the ambient light from them makes the rest of the wording quite readable, even from a distance. The two distinct 'pools' of light compliment the the two, one syllable words of the pub - The Bell.

The two little spots for the actual bell over the door are positioned as equally far apart as the adjacent window will allow, and set to illuminate as much of the bell as is possible. Although the front side of the bell is in darkness, the back is highly illuminated, and shines nicely. You don't need a full moon to understand that the moon is actually a sphere, and it's the same with a bell.

A shareholder came up to me tonight and asked me if I thought that a third spot would be good on the front, held by a bracket so that all of the bell would be illuminated, and I said that I didn't - the reason being that as they are now, the light comes from the inside out which is quite welcoming for a pub. The outside in is not so welcoming. Another bracket would also be quite ugly in the daylight.

That's it.
